April Fools!

I have a new storytime session starting on the first Monday of April. Although April Fools Day falls on a Tuesday this year, we will be celebrating it the following week on April 7.

I think that the whole month of April is cause for a silly celebration!

Songs:

If you’re happy and you know it

April Fools Song (Jingle Bells Tune)
April fool, April fool,
April fool today.
You fool me and I fool you,
Then we laugh and say-
April fool, April fool!
It’s so fun to play.
You fool me and I fool you.
That’s how we play today.

Shake my Sillies Out

Rhymes/Fingerplays:

We can stomp
We can stomp, stomp, stomp (stomp feet)
We can hop, hop, hop
We can clap, clap, clap
We can STOP.
We can nod our heads “Yes”
We can shake our heads “No”
We can bend our knees a little
And sit down slow.

Tick Tock
Tick tock, tick tock (Sway back and forth)
I’m a little cuckoo clock (Point to self)
Tick tock, tick tock (Sway back and forth)
Now I’m striking one o’clock! (repeat with two, etc)
Joke of the Day (instead of Poem):

Q: What do librarians take with them when they go fishing?
A: Bookworms!

Early Literacy Tip:

Talk with children to increase vocabulary and comprehension! Telling jokes with your child is a fun way to introduce new words and concepts. Start with a few simple “Knock, Knock” jokes. Even if children can’t make up their own jokes, they can start by mimicking you and having fun with words!

Sign of the Day:

Smile!

And I will too
You read to me
And I’ll read to you.

Early Literacy Tip:

Discovering books and writing are beginning steps in literacy. Learning to hold a book, turn book pages, scribble from left to right, and follow a narrative are all early literacy skills that will help children when they get to school! Read and write around children to encourage them to do the same!

Girl Power: Empowering Picture Books for Girls

I had a patron ask for empowering books to read to a troop of kindergarten aged girl scouts. I came up with a few that we had available at our library. Can you think of some great titles that I am missing?

I thought this question was a great opportunity to create a list for future reference. I am always teaching gender equality or neutrality, but that doesn’t change the fact that most female protagonists still end up being princesses, fairies, fairy princesses, or some variation of a damsel in distress. Here are picture books that offer a different type of female character.
